About Us
Jane Owen
I grew up in Bedford and began my career in Trading Standards enforcement in 1988, working first in Bedfordshire and then the London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing and Harrow. Whilst working I gained the Diploma in Consumer Affairs, a professional qualification for enforcement officers. After 6 years in enforcement and the birth of my first child, I decided to join a small consultancy business which specialised in quality assurance, food technology and product safety. During the next 5 years I experienced trading law compliance from the point of view of the trade. This gave me valuable experience in using my knowledge of the legislation and experience of the enforcement process to devise practical solutions for businesses.
I saw that the high costs of consultancy services and the variable service available from Trading Standards departments was leaving many businesses with no option but to risk contravening trading law. I wanted to provide an alternative, giving the businesses the advice they needed; accessible in terms of cost, on a timescale which complemented businesses needs and, most importantly, gave businesses solutions which were practical and straightforward to implement. From this, Vital Product Solutions was born.
When I'm not getting excited about the latest consultation on new regulations I love spending time with my family - my partner Clive, our five children, two guinea pigs and Charlie the dog. I buy lots of books but don't get time to read many of them and I enjoy cooking - quite fortunately as a large family takes some feeding! I'm actively involved in Education Otherwise (an organisation which supports families who are practising or contemplating home education) both on a national and local basis, and also Bedford Home Watch. As a family we spend alot of our spare time on our allotment.
